PhotoShop and Illustrator for Fashion Merchandising
Week 4
MidTerm and Final Projects:
Next week (week 5) you will need to hand in your portfolio with 5 images created with Photoshop. The images shoudl use the teachniques that we have covered during the first 4 weeks of the course. Each image should be printed at the Brooks Copy Center or Kinkos. Do not try to print portfolio quality images using a home ink jet printer!
How to Print using the Copy Center
To print to the color printer you must first name your document as follows: LastName_FirstInitial.psd. Then use File>Print and select CP02 as the printer. You will then walk over to the Print Center and let them know which file to process. You will be able to pay when you are there with a Print Card.
Be aware that the printer can not print from edge to edge, so you will need to allow a margin around the edges of your document. Photoshop will warn you if you have extended your image too far into the non-printable area.
These effects are availble to be applied to any text layer. Just click on the icon on the menu bar along the top of the screen when the text tool is selected. Note that a text layer can have Layer Style or these text effects only. If you want to use filters then the text layer must be "rasterized". This means that the text will be converted to shapes and will no longer be editable. But then you can apply any of the Filters to the layer.

Create a new RGB image to work with. This example is 325x125, Resolution 72 dpi.
- Choose Edit -> Fill -> Black to fill the background layer with black.
- Choose a Bright Green color as your foreground.
- Select the Type Tool and choose the Horizontal Type Mask Tool.
- Next click inside the document and type any text you want (choose any font or size you like but you want it large; about 60 pt)). Click the Check mark in the Options bar to finalize the text layer.
- You will now see your word outlined in marching ants.
- Choose Edit-> Fill-> Forground Color (the green ). Opacity should be 100%.
- Go to Select-> Feather 2 pixels
- Choose Filter-> Blur-> Radial Blur (100, Zoom, Best)
- Without deselecting, repeat the previous step.
- Now, Select-> Inverse and repeat the Blur step again... Filter-> Blur-> Radial Blur (100, Zoom, Best).
- Use Ctrl+D to deselect and view your work.
1. Make an image 350 pixels wide and 250 tall. Make the background black .
2. Select the text tool and set the color to white.
3. Type out what ever text you want with the type tool . Use a large block font as above.
4. Go to Layer > Flatten Image to merge your text into your background layer.
5. Go to Filter > Stylize > Wind with the wind option "from the left". Re-apply by clicking Filter>Wind..
6. Go to Filter > Stylize > Wind again except chose the "From the right" option. Re-apply just as before.
7. Do this again vertically by going to Image > Rotate canvas > 90 CCW . Now repeat steps 5 and 6 .
8. Rotate your canvas back to normal by going to Image > Rotate Canvas > 90 CW .
9. Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur (set at 2 ). Then Filter > Distort > Ripple. Now you have your flames!
10 . Give the image some color by doing the following:
a) Image > Mode > Grayscale
b) Image > Mode > Indexed Color
c) Image > Mode > Color Table
d) Set the table to Black Body.
11. Now you can make it so you can see the words. Switch the colors on the color pallete so the type is black and type your words again and position it over the old text .
In Class Project:
If there is time available, go to http://www.n-sane.net/tutorials.php and select a text effect tutorial and see if, following the instructions, you can create the image as described. Note that there are thousands of tutorial sites and they vary widely in quality. The trick is to work through the tutorial attempting to understand the purpose of each step. That way when it gets confusing (and it will) you can figure out what the author had in mind.

1. Create a 500x500 image in photoshop and make the background Black .
2. Using the text tool, type a word in White .
3. Rasterize the layer ( Layer -> Rasterize -> Layer ) and name it "Light". This changes the letters into shapes.
4. CTRL Click on the Light layer on the Layers pallete (usually on the right) to select the text. Note the marching ants.
5. Copy and Paste the selection (Ctrl+C and then Ctrl+V) and name the new layer "light2."
6. Delete layer "light"
7. Here comes the fun part! Select layer "Light2" and go Filter -> Distort -> Polar Coordinates and choose Polar to Rectangular
8. Go to Filter -> Stylize -> Wind and choose Wind for the method and From the right for the Direction. Repeat.
9. Repeat Step 8 exept for the direction, choose From the Left . Repeat
10. Go to Image -> Rotate Canvas -> 90 CW
11. Go to Filter -> Stylize -> Wind and choose Wind for the method and From the right for the Direction. Repeat.
12. Go to Image -> Rotate Canvas -> 90 CCW
13. Go to Filter -> Distort -> Polar Coordinates and choose Rectangular to Polar
14. Select the Text tool and write the text you first started with. Color it a different color and move it over the white! Voila! You are done!
Optional: Add color to your Light2 to make it look even cooler!
